When we first moved into this house, we had 3 bedrooms: the master, one for our combined office/game/tv room, and the third was a guest room. We put our bookshelves and a tv on the wall and then had a blow up mattress for when guests (read: the in-laws) came to stay. Well, we didn't have guests that often, and this spring, I had a brain storm: to stay in this house longer instead of looking for a bigger/better place, let's do some improvements to make it better! We redid our office room quite a bit, and then decided at the same time to turn the guest room into my craft room! Yes, that is complete joy on my face to be able to say that, I have always wanted a dedicated space for all of my many crafty hobbies. :)
The space was tight, so I needed a good plan going in. It had to allow for the current TV on the wall and the bookshelves, and I wanted to reuse the old couch because even though it's falling apart, it's super comfy (I bought it for my first apartment for $50 from a neighbor's grandma!). Then the other requirements were just to bring in as much storage and workspace as possible.
IKEA prices were the key here, we couldn't have just done it with the few shelves I already had.
My little layout shows what the plan was, and how some things only have a teeny bit of clearance but they still work.
These are the overview pictures - showing off as you walk in the room, the cubey shelves along the left-hand wall, and the bookshelves on the right-hand wall.
The cubeys are awesome, and I've since noticed that quite a few craft/knitting stores use these for their organization too. I've got crafting books, yarns, fabrics, paper goods, and plenty of other stuff stored here, and the desk mounts to the side of it.
Here's more close-ups on the various areas, there's descriptions on each of the photo pages:
I really love it. The couch may go at some point to make way for some non-roll-y versions of the desk chair for when friends come to craft. I wish the TV was lower or could be tilted, but I tend to listen to things when I'm in here more than watching anyhow, so it's not bad (shows that I have to video because the TiVo in the other room is already busy, like Grey's Anatomy while the Office is on).
I also plan to make more use of the bulletin board (which I painted, it was one that was teal and pink from my high school years) and the white board now that they are all set with markers and pins.
This is me modeling my hand-knitted cami in front of the shelves before everything was situated, but you can see by my smile that I'm happy to be in the room!
Hope you enjoyed the tour :)
